ROW80 – Round 1 – Check-in #4

It’s Sunday and that means time for another ROW80 progress update. This week dipped a little bit but still all around good progress.

Writing Goals:

  • Complete outline of WIP
  • Write 1750 words a week, on average 250 words a day (can be on WIP or other writings like flash fiction, character development, world building etc)
    1923 words total this week
  • Finish James Scott Bell book
Wrote out notes for chapter 4 & 5
  • Read 2 other writing craft books

Social Media Goals:

  • Blog – post 4 times a week
    4 posts – total word count: 2683
  • Blog – post ROW80 progress reports twice a week (Sunday and Wednesday)
  • Tweet/Comment on at least 10 blogs a week
  • Comment on 1 new blog per week (ROW80 or otherwise)

Healthy Lifestyle Goals:

  • Cardio – 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday)
Done. This week we tried skating (now referred to as Death by Skating in my house – wowzers!)
  • BowFlex – 3 times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday)
Nope – 2 times this week – just been too sore.
  • Maintain a daily food/migraine journal

The wins:

  • Exceeded my word goal.
  • Met all my social media goals.
  • Met “most” of my healthy lifestyle goals (I’ve gone hard-core on the water with lemon and we went out to breakfast for my Mom’s birthday and ordered a very healthy breakfast – success). We also really enjoyed trying a somewhat new sport (hadn’t been skating in about 6 years). It’s a fun way to get cardio in and looking forward to going back this week.

Where to improve:

  • Like last week, for my word goal I only wrote 3 evenings and around 120 minutes. I want to increase the time spent on my WIP. Maybe similar writing times/amount but add time on plotting, planning and idea brainstorming. Priority this week.
  • I really need to make time to read craft books.
  • This week I want to make sure I get all 3 work-outs in and really concentrate on food. This weekend, we went to the movies and broke down and had the popcorn (although no butter). I want to learn how to go out to stuff we used to eat unhealthy at but adopt healthy eating practices. Retrain the brain.

How are you making out with your ROW80 goals?

  1. well done natalie

  2. Ok, you inspired me. I just wrote out my goals for myself. Now I might actually start keeping track of my word count daily and weekly and the blogs I read and comment on. Oh, wow, I’m not a naturally organized person. You had an awesome week! Congrats.

  3. Sounds like you made great progress to me. I sooo gotta start making an effort to live a more healthy lifestyle, but its HARD. lol. Gotta give it 110% there is no 50% in this department.

P.S. What genre you writing in?

    • The healthy lifestyle part is the hardest. There’s just sooo much temptation and convenience around every corner. The other night I actually DREAMED of BBQ chips!! LOL!! Here’s to you doing it hardcore with us starting this week…
To start, I am writing a paranormal (YA likely) because it’s a great story idea and fits into the writing craft books easily. Although I plan on writing women’s fiction for the most part once I get something under my belt. LOL!!

  4. Fab week Natalie. And you have a plan for the upcoming week, kudos, best of luck!

  5. Wow, you wrote more blog post words than WIP words. Maybe you could re-direct some time from one to the other.
Good call on allocating time to plotting and research. I didn’t plan for that, and I couldn’t write more because I didn’t know _what_ to write.
Death by skating? I think I’ve tried this sport before 🙂
    Good job this week, Natalie!

    • I know, eh?! I typically write more words for the blog than my own WIP. I will definitely be looking to redirect some of that energy to my WIP as I gear up. Absolutely.
Did you read Rachel Aaron’s post on how she went from writing 2k/day to writing 10k/day? It was amazing and she said that knowing what you are going to write before you sit down is key.
Skating – OMG – I am so out of shape. Oh well, it’ll come with time and practice. LOL!

  6. When I made the lifestyle change and gave up the food they had at the movie theaters I started taking in my own bottled water and snack. The snack would either be a protein bar or small bag of nut & fruit mixed. You can try doing something like that. Your body will eventually adapt and that other stuff won’t even look that good to you. (Most of the time)

I agree with Fabio, you are direction more of your writing time to your posts. That was what I was doing and that’s were all my word count was going. That’s why I bumped the WIP to the top of my priority list for Row80. It has made a difference. Maybe you can join us for the word sprints. 🙂

    • That is a fantastic idea Debra. I will definitely bring my own water and healthy treat next time. I am sure that will help reduce temptation! 🙂
Absolutely!!! What’s your time zone? I was just telling hubby that I need to join in on some sprints!!

  7. This looks like a great week to me! I think this is my first time at your blog and I want to say, I like the title and I love the “Be yourself, everyone else is taken” motto. I’d be dangerous if I owned a BeDazzler also, but only because something about me isn’t gadget-friendly.

Good luck in the coming week!

    • I am so glad you enjoy my little blog digs and my motto! 🙂
Here’s to our BeDazzling madness. LOL!!!
Thanks so much for swinging by and commenting. I’ll be over to check your blog out tomorrow. 🙂

  8. Fantastic week, Natalie. I love your positive attitude and how dedicated you are to the fitness. Keep it up!

  9. Great job on your goals. Just like Fabio, I would suggest setting aside more time for your WIP and less for blogging. But that’s something you need to decide on your own.

Congrats on staying on track with the exercise and a healthy eating!

Keep rocking, girl. You are an amazing inspiration to all of us.

  10. Kerry Meacham says:

    Great job, Nat.

  11. Natalie, this sounds like amazing progress to me! I hear you on ‘retraining the brain’ when it comes to healthy eating. Whenever I go to the grocery store now, I basically have to avoid entire aisles, since I really can’t allow any chips, crackers, or cookies in the house. I made the mistake of buying pretzels (2 bags for $3!), and then ate them all day Thursday and most of Friday in lieu of real meals. So I’m trying to remember that fruits and veggies are better snacks to have, and that I really do like spinach. 😀

    • I know. I have to avoid the snack aisle entirely or I am done like dinner!!! I have learned I don’t have enough self-control right now. Maybe someday?!?! LOL!!
Stick with it – it’ll come….we can do it together!!!

  12. Good going Natalie! I think you have set some fantastic goals!

  13. Great progress, Natalie! Go, girl!

  14. Well done, my friend. Your weekly word count is impressive.

  15. Great progress, Natalie! I love how you mentioned setting aside specific time for the plotting, etc. piece. As I’ve gotten more into the craft books this round, read more novel structure advice blogs and wrote more towards my novel WIP, I see some plot holes in my initial outline. I don’t want to steal from writing time to muckle back into the details, so I’ll also need to figure out when to get this done.

And Fabio (and the others) make a great point re: blog word count versus WIP word count. For me, I’m taking to heart what someone told me about prioritizing the novel WIP first above short stories or anything else that catches my eye. Not saying I can’t do the other, but prioritizing time for the book will get that first draft written. And we are so getting our first drafts done. 🙂

  16. Amazing week, Natalie! You’ve really accomplished quite a bit. You’ll smoothe out the areas that you think need improvement. If you need some help making healthier food choices, I am available to help you with what I’ve learned over the past 15 years of studying this topic. Just send me an email with questions, if you’d like.
    Have a great upcoming week!

  17. OMG, I’M SO PROUD! Look at all those lovely non-bloggy words!!! You’re hitting it hard, girl. Plus, you’re gonna be sassy and sleek for your sunny trip down to warmer regions. 🙂

    You keep it up. 🙂

p.s. My post tomorrow has the word “pecker” in it. I’m just sayin…

  18. Great job, Natalie! Even if you think you need improvement in some areas, I think you’re doing wonderfully!
    Have a great week!

  19. Looking good, Natalie! Those word counts are sweet! Good luck on the exercise & food front. I’ve been slacking, but I’m back on track. Enjoy your week.

  20. way to track your wins, and what you want to work on. that’s really a great idea 🙂

    happy writing this week!
