Blog of the Month: A Page of My Own

This month I would like to highlight one of my favorite blogs that I subscribe to and read regularly: A Page of My Own by Walker.

Summary of the blog

This is a personal blog of a woman’s journey through life as a divorce, grandmother of two embarking on a new career as a freelance writer while at the same time, trying to write her first novel.

She writes on everything from her experiences as a freelance writer, the struggles with writing a novel, blogging tips and resources, stories about dating in midlife, thoughts on life in general etc.

Why I like the blog

First of all, one of my most favorite things about this blog is how it is so extremely well written and organized. Honestly, it doesn’t necessarily matter what she writes about, I simply enjoy reading the posts – how she strings words, sentences, and imagery together. It’s soothing to read. It’s inspiring. It’s simply beautiful and her talent as a writer shines through.

Second, I love the personality in her blog. When you read her posts, you come away feeling like you really know her, as if it’s a letter to you from your best friend. She writes so authentically and with such feeling and intimacy, it’s hard not to feel like you are having a personal conversation with her. I envy her writing.

Third, she has the other critical element – a huge variety of interesting post topics. How she does it, I don’t know but I admire this talent of hers immensely. She writes about the most interesting things – videos that inspire, posts that make you laugh, grin, or wake you up, make you take notice, and think. She provides great resources to blogging, writing, freelancing, and living – it’s just wonderful! Reading her blog, I am never bored and I am always interested to see her next post.

Posts that spoke to me

Write Long and Deep Enough and The Story Reveals Itself – this powerful post is about discovering the true story one is meant to write and she reveals so honestly with raw emotion how she’s coming to discover her own. It’s a post that moved me given my own struggles with finding my story (and avoiding it) and it inspired me to push through my fears and do what I know needs to get done.

Speaking and Writing With Authority – incredible post with a video that explores in a stunning visual manner the way we speak today and the lack of authority and conviction most of us have. The video is inspirational, powerful and moving. It made me want to stand up and shout out loud…something…anything…and with conviction and authority!

Writing My Little Heart Out-NaNoWriMo – in this post, Walker introduced me to NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month where over 100,000 people from all across the globe try to write a 50,000 page novel in a month. I had never heard of this movement before and I fell in love immediately with the idea and the concept. Add to that, Walker signed up for the challenge and chronicled her struggles and her wins along the way helping to make all of us writers feel just a little bit more normal in our own struggles and wins.

Dissecting the Literary Pitch and How Mine Went Awry – as a writer not even “out there” yet in any way, shape or form, I love the amount of resource type posts (although personal and interesting at the same time) Walker puts out there. This is the type of information that all writers need to know, to hear, to see, and to learn from but aren’t always able to find. I love how in the post, you feel like you were almost there with her, which gives you the sense of confidence to head out and try it yourself. This is just one of many posts that will serve and help me on my own writing journey.

Be sure to check out the A Page of My Own blog – it’s definitely a worthwhile, fun visit and I guarantee, you’ll keep going back for more.
